Weight Loss

Obesity is a common problem in the UK. It is thought to affect around 25% of all adults and around 1 in every 5 children aged 10 to 11.

Obesity increases the risk of developing type 2 diabetes, heart disease and cancer.

Regular exercise and a 5% reduction in body weight could reduce your type 2 diabetes risk by more than 50%.

What is the science behind weight loss injections?

Weight loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro work by mimicking natural hormones in the body that regulate appetite and blood sugar levels.

  • Wegovy (Semaglutide): This medication activates GLP-1 receptors, which help control hunger and slow digestion. By making you feel full for longer, it reduces food intake and supports weight loss.
  • Mounjaro (Tirzepatide): Unlike Ozempic, Mounjaro is a dual agonist, meaning it mimics two hormones—GLP-1 and GIP (Glucose-Dependent Insulinotropic Polypeptide). This combination enhances appetite control, improves insulin sensitivity, and promotes greater weight loss compared to GLP-1-only medications.

Both injections were originally developed for type 2 diabetes but have shown significant benefits for weight management. They help individuals eat less, maintain a calorie deficit, and regulate metabolism, making them effective tools for medical weight loss.

Mounjaro (tirzepatide) has shown significant weight loss effects in clinical trials. On average, people using Mounjaro for 72 weeks can expect to lose up to 23% of their body weight

The effectiveness of Mounjaro appears to be higher than Wegovy (semaglutide), which resulted in an average weight loss of 14% over a same period. Additionally, those on Mounjaro reported better blood pressure, blood sugar, and cholesterol levels.

This treatment is for adults with a BMI over 30 or those with a BMI over 27 and a weight-related health condition, such as high blood pressure or high cholesterol. It is injected once a week under the skin (subcutaneous injection).

What is the role of weight loss capsules in medical weight management?

Orlistat is a weight loss medication that works by blocking fat absorption in the digestive system. Instead of affecting appetite or metabolism like other treatments, Orlistat prevents about a third of dietary fat from being broken down and absorbed by the body.

How It Works:

  • When you eat, enzymes in your stomach and intestines break down fat so it can be absorbed.
  • Orlistat inhibits these enzymes, meaning a portion of the fat remains undigested.
  • This undigested fat is then passed out naturally through bowel movements.

Key Benefits:

  • Helps reduce calorie intake by limiting fat absorption.
  • Works alongside a healthy diet and exercise for effective weight management.
  • Available in both prescription (120mg) and over-the-counter (60mg) versions.

Since Orlistat affects fat digestion, it’s recommended to follow a balanced diet and take a multivitamin, as it can reduce the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins.
