Period Delay
There may be times that you wish to delay your period for example due to a holiday, a religious pilgrimage or that special day…your wedding!
Our pharmacist will ask you a few questions in our consultation room, ensuring your privacy and to make sure that the tablets prescribed are safe for you to take.

How Does Period Delay Work?
Your menstrual cycle is regulated by hormones, primarily oestrogen and progesterone. Throughout the month, progesterone maintains the womb lining, preparing it for a possible pregnancy. If fertilisation doesn’t occur, progesterone levels drop, triggering the start of menstruation and the shedding of the womb lining.
Period delay treatments work by keeping progesterone levels higher for longer, preventing the shedding process and postponing your period. This temporary hormonal adjustment allows you to delay menstruation for a set period. Once the medication is stopped, hormone levels naturally return to normal, and your period resumes as expected.
Who Can Use Period Delay Treatments?
Period delay treatments are suitable for most women, but they may not be recommended for those with certain medical conditions. If you’re considering delaying your period, our pharmacists can assess your health history and determine if treatment is right for you.
The Pill
If you’re using the combined contraceptive pill, you can delay your period by taking two packs back-to-back without a break. The exact method depends on the type of pill you’ve been prescribed, so it’s best to consult our pharmacist for personalised advice. However, it’s important to speak to your GP first to ensure it’s safe for you.
If you’re on the progestogen-only pill, this method won’t work for delaying your period. If you’re unsure which type of pill you’re taking, our pharmacist can help by reviewing your prescription and offering guidance.
